REFLECTIONS

How many times each day do you catch a glimpse of yourself? We are surrounded by mirrors and polished surfaces. We are seldom far from the shiny surfaces of liquids, be that lakes or cups of coffee!

Reflections are great subjects for photos with your digital camera.

Reflections can generate symmetry in your photograph - which is always pleasing to the eye. Research has shown that people generally regarded as the most beautiful are those with the most symmetrical faces!

Reflections can also create the unusual and the abstract.

Take your digital camera into the city and look for reflections on modern buildings, which are often constructed of glass and steel. A wide angle lens will add exaggerated perspective and drama to your photographs.

Head into the park and take a walk around the duck pond, leave the bread at home! A sunny day will provide strong reflections. Sunsets reflected on water can result in photographs with an "impressionist" feel. A short telephoto or zoom lens on your camera will allow you to frame images at the water's edge.

Beware! Shiny surfaces, especially with bright highlights such as sun on water, can fool your digital camera's exposure metering. Check your exposure histograms, and bracket widely for success.
