APERTURE
The hole in the lens that controls how much light passes through to the camera sensor, eg F2.8, F16 etc.
APERTURE PRIORITY
An automated exposure function of a camera, you select the aperture and the camera sets the correct shutter speed for the current lighting level.
DEPTH OF FOCUS
The band of sharp focus in a photograph before and after the distance value set on the lens.
MEMORY CARD
A digital storage card that slots into a camera. Various formats exist including CF "Compact Flash" and SD "Secure Digital". Available in varying storage sizes too, eg 4GB "4 gigabytes".
PROGRAM MODE
An automated exposure function of the camera. The camera selects both the aperture and shutter speed values for correct exposure of the current lighting level.
SENSOR
The light sensitive digital chip in the camera, consists of a large rectangular matrix of individual pixels. Various sizes available, eg 10MP "10 megapixels" or "10 million pixels".
SHUTTER SPEED
The amount of time that the shutter blind in the camera body is open, eg 1/250 of a second.
SHUTTER PRIORITY
Also known as TIME VALUE (Tv). An automated exposure function of a camera, you select the shutter speed and the camera sets the correct aperture for the current lighting level.
TELEPHOTO LENS
A "long" focal length lens which magnifies subjects, useful for wildlife and sports photography. Eg 300mm.
TRIPOD
A three legged support upon which a camera can be mounted.
VIEWFINDER
An eyepiece on a camera through which you look in order to compose an image.
WIDE ANGLE LENS
A "short" focal length lens which gives a wider angle of view than the human eye, useful for landscape and architectural photography. Eg 24mm.
ZOOM LENS
A lens of changeable focal length. Eg 80-200mm telepho, or 18-70mm wideangle to short telephoto.
